The Ultimate 5-Minute Cycling Ride Pie
Ride Pie. A pie you make, bake, and take with you on a cycling ride. A Ride Pie isn’t your ordinary pie, though. It’s a pie made from sliced bread and your choice of filling, baked to buttery perfection. The best part? It takes only 5 minutes to prep so you can spend more time riding, and less time pie-ing!
Here is everything you need to make the Ultimate 5-Minute Cycling Ride Pie!
Ride Pie Baking Ingredients, Equipment, and Supplies
Sliced sandwich bread - A soft, white bread works best for these ride pies.
These AWESOME Uncrustable Sandwich Cutters and Sealers - This product is super affordable, let’s you stuff more filling inside, and makes it easier to transport without making a mess.
If you don’t have a sandwich cutter, simply use a drinking glass or wide-mouth mason jar to cut and seal your ride pie.
Choice of filling(s) - You can use store-bought jams, jellies, nut butter, apple butter, cheese, or pizza sauce. Better yet, make your own fillings! See my recipe recommendations below!
Sheet Pan or Cookie Sheet - I love USA Pan for it’s non-stick pans and easy cleanup.
Food wrap or storage for riding with your pie - I recommend Skratch Paper, Slick Wrap, or a sandwich-sized Stasher Bag to wrap and carry your pie.
The Ultimate Cycling Ride Pie Recipe
A simple pie made from sliced bread, your choice of filling, and baked to buttery perfection. Once it’s done, all you have to do is get out and ride to make it a legit ride pie.
Makes 4 pies
5 minutes prep, 10-15 minutes to bake
Ingredients
8 pieces of soft white bread (I’ve used Dave’s Killer’s White Bread and it works AWESOME for this recipe)
1 heaping Tbsp of filling (Find filling recipes and ideas below)
The Ultimate Trio Of Sweet Spreads (Strawberry Cardamom Chia Jam, Chocolatey Hazelnut Spread and Spiced Honey Cashew Butter)
Toasted Almond and CocoaNut Butter (Bakin’ Biker’s Club recipe)
Easy Granola Butter (Blend 3 cups of your favorite granola with a 1-2 Tbsp coconut oil in a food processor)
Apple butter + diced apple pieces
Water for sealing edges (If using the glass cut-out method)
Melted butter or coconut oil for brushing on top of your pies before baking
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Add a heaping spoonful of filling to one piece of bread. If using a drinking glass to cut your pie, brush water around the edges to help seal it. Top with the other slice of bread. Repeat for the remaining pieces of bread.
Use your sandwich cutter to cut and seal your pie. Or, using a rimmed glass or mason jar, press the two crusts together to cut your pie. Seal the edges with your fingers.
Brush the top of your pies with melted butter or coconut oil and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until bread is toasted and golden brown on top.
Wrap and Ride with Your Pie
When your pies are baked and you are ready to ride, simply wrap them with Skratch Paper or stick them in a Stasher Sandwich bag. Here are 9 of my other favorite ways to pack, wrap, and ride with my cycling snacks.
Benefits of Ride Pies
Using real food vs. pre-packaged bars to fuel your rides provides 5 main benefits.
You Get To Control What Ingredients You Put Into Your Body - What you put into it is what you get out of it. When you make real, homemade food, you don’t need to add those extra, unrecognizable ingredients you often find in pre-packaged foods.
Real Foods Can Be Easier To Digest - Homemade foods naturally contain more water content than prepackaged foods, which can make it easier for your body to digest them. Happy gut = happy ride.
It Is More Cost-Effective - The average pre-packaged bar ranges from $2.88-$3.12. It can cost anywhere from 30-60 cents per bar when you make them at home.
Better For The Environment and Local Business -When you make your own homemade foods, you don’t need individual wrappers, boxes, shipping vessels, or a commercial kitchen.
Food Is More Than Just Fuel - Food is more than just macros and calories. It’s the pursuit of nourishing our bodies for sport, life, and our overall well-being. Food is meant to be enjoyed, satisfy our taste buds, and make us happy. And these ride pies will do just that.!
