2. What I’ve Been Reading Lately

I’m constantly on a quest to become a better cyclist, cook, and coach. My inspiration for personal development has largely been inspired by the books I have in the house. Here is what has been on my reading list as of late.

  1. Atomic Habits - I like to preach that you are what you repeatedly do. Instead of setting big, ambitious goals, this book reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results. Whether you want to eat better, get on the bike more, or live a more productive and healthy lifestyle, this is a good read to pick up.

  2. Chris Carmichael's Food for Fitness: Eat Right to Train Right - Athletes have used Carmichael’s innovative nutrition periodization program to lead active, healthy, and high-energy lifestyles. This is an easy read to help dial in your nutrition throughout the entirety of a cycling season.

  3. The Vegetarian Athlete's Cookbook: More Than 100 Delicious Recipes for Active Living - A simple cookbook packed with 100 delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes, many of which are suitable for vegans. Some of my favorites in this book include the veggie burgers and a variety of energy bar recipes.

3. Spring Nutrition Tips + Recipes

Spring is upon us! (almost!) As our training/volume of riding begins to ramp up, we need to make sure we are adjusting what we eat to accommodate our increasing activity levels. We also want to reduce inflammation and recover well. Here are a few nutrition tips + recipes to help crush your upcoming spring riding season.

Spring Nutrition Keywords

  • Increase the percentage of carbs you eat (oats, buckwheat, sweet potatoes, quinoa, potatoes, rice)

  • Focus on eating more lean proteins

  • Eat more sprouted foods to help with digestion (oats, nuts, and legumes)

  • Eat moderate amounts of fats (butter, coconut oil, olive oil)

  • Always prioritize seasonal, fresh fruits and veggies in your diet

5. Chilton High School Baking Class

Biked Goods' mission is to empower youth to live healthy, active lifestyles through cycling and nutrition enlightenment and a community dedicated to supporting them in their ride toward a better future.

We do this by donating 10% of sales from Biked Goods products and services toward the Biked Goods Cookie Jar Fund. These funds help power affordable, equitable nutrition and cycling programs for youth, especially those most in need.

I was grateful for the opportunity to join my sister, Ms. Z, and her class at Chilton High School in Wisconsin for a Biked Goods baking class this past February.

The class chose to make Sweet and Salty Energy Bites from the Bakin’ Biker ‘24 Cookbook. We gathered around the table, measured out our ingredients, and got our hands a little messy rolling our bites together.
